    Abstract

    Indonesian young learners often face difficulties in developing English vocabulary and grammar skills due to the absence of effective methods that promote meaningful and authentic language use. Task-based Learning (TBL) offers a potential solution, yet its implementation in Indonesian EYL contexts remains limited and underexplored, prompting the need to investigate its effectiveness. The objective of this research was to expose the values of Task-based Learning implementation in the young learners’ context, synthesized with the Systemic Functional Linguistics (SFL) framework. A single-case study was employed, involving fifteen participants from the English for Kids program in Tasikmalaya, West Java. Data were collected from four sources: (1) classroom observations over 12 sessions (60 minutes each), in which the researcher acted as teacher using TBL; (2) interviews with three learners representing low, mid, and high achievement levels; and (3) learners’ spoken and written texts. Observation and interview data were analysed thematically, while student texts were examined using thematic progression and transitivity analyses within the SFL framework. Findings indicate that TBL improved learners’ vocabulary and grammar competencies through five key practices: input-based tasks, interactive participation, focus on meaningful communication, authentic tasks, and scaffolding. Thematic progression analysis revealed more coherent text organization, while transitivity analysis showed improved ability to represent actions and processes. Interviews supported these findings, highlighting vocabulary gains, increased motivation, and greater confidence, alongside challenges with task difficulty, proficiency, and pronunciation. It is concluded that TBL can effectively boost young learners’ English vocabulary and grammar competencies. It is recommended that future studies apply this approach to different age groups, proficiency levels, and educational contexts within and beyond Indonesia.
