    Abstract

The purpose of this study was to test Theory of Investment in Human Capital (Becker, 1962), Social Stratification Theory (Weber, 1946; Lenski, 1966) and Social Capital Theory (Coleman, 1988) on the decision to continue higher education among 12th-grade high school students in Soe, South Central Timor Regency, East Nusa Tenggara Province. This study employed a quantitative approach using an explanatory survey method, with data collected through questionnaires administered to 300 senior high school students in Soe selected through stratified proportional random sampling. Data analysis used binary logistic regression. The results showed that parental education significantly influenced the decision to pursue higher education, while parental income did not influence the decision, peer effect influenced the decision to continue higher education, there were gender differences in the decision to continue higher education, and geographical differences also emerged. Theoretically, this study reinforces the Theory of Investment in Human Capital, Social Stratification Theory, and Social Capital Theory. The results indicate that parental education and income, as indicators of socio-economic status (SES), reflect the family’s economic and cultural capital, which determine both the ability and willingness to invest in a child’s education. Meanwhile, peer effects highlight the role of the social environment and peer networks in shaping educational decisions. These findings confirm that the decision to pursue higher education is influenced by a combination of family economic capacity, social position, and social capital.
