Abstract
Keterampilan presentasi lisan, khususnya dalam konteks akademik, sangat penting karena mencerminkan siswa terhadap suatu topik serta kemampuan mereka dalam mengembangkan keterampilan komunikasi dan memenuhi tuntuan akademik tertentu. TED (Technology, Entertainment, Design) Talks berfungsi sebagai media untuk menyebarkan pengetahuan dan menunjukkan kemampuan presentasi akademik. Meskipun analisis genre telah banyak diterapkan untuk mengkaji TED Talks, perbandingan rhetorical move antara TED Talks berbahasa Korea dan Indonesia belum banyak dieksplorasi secara mendalam. Tujuan penelitian ini adalah untuk mengidentifikasi dan membandingkan rhetorical move dalam TED Talks berbahasa Korea dan Indonesia, termasuk occurences, salience. Selain itu penelitian ini juga bertujuan untuk mengidentifikasi dan membandingkan pola retorika dalam TED Talks di kedua bahasa. Dengan menggunakan analisis genre berbasis korpus terhadap 20 video TED Talks (10 berbahasa Korea, 10 berbahasa Indonesia), kemudian dengan pendekatan pengkodean manual berdasarkan kerangka analisis move dari Chang dan Huang. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa Move 2 (Topic Introduction), Move 4 (Topic development), dan Move 7 (Aknowlegement/Gratituted) bersifat obligatory di kedua bahasa. Kesamaan juga ditemukan pada tingkat Step, di mana dalam engage in meta level discussion, outline structure, establish authority, show stance, dan offer an explanation tidak menjadi prioritas dalam kedua bahasa. Dalam hal pola Move-Step, pembicara Korea cenderung memulai presentasi mereka dengan membangun koneksi dengan audiens, sedangkan pembicara Indonesia umumnya memulai dengan mengambangkan konteks topik. Temuan ini menyoroti pengaruh bahasa terhadap struktur retorika dan menyarankan penerapan hasilnya dalam pengembangan bahan ajar yang bertujuan meningkatkan genre awareness dan keterampilan presentasi akademik di kalangan pembelajar bahasa asing. Oral presentation skills, especially in academic contexts, are highly important, as they reflect students’ understanding of a topic and ability to develop their communication skills and fulfill specific academic requirements. TED (Technology, Entertainment, Design) Talks serve as a medium for disseminating knowledge and demonstrating academic presentation skills. Although genre analysis has been widely applied to unpack TED Talks, the comparison of rhetorical moves between Korean and Indonesian TED Talks has not extensively explored. This study aims to identify and contrast rhetorical moves in Korean and Indonesian TED Talks, including its occurrences, salience, and patterns. This study employed a corpus-based genre analysis on 20 TED Talk videos (10 Korean, 10 Indonesian), using a manual coding approach based on Chang and Huang’s move analysis framework. The results show that Move 2 Topic Introduction, Move 4 Topic Development, and Move 7 Acknowledgements/gratitude were obligatory in both languages. Similarities also appear in the Step-level in which engaging audience in meta-level discussion, outlining structure, establishing authority, showing stance, and offering an explanation are not prioritized in both languages. In terms of the Move-Step patterns, while Korean speakers tend to begin their presentations by building a connection with the audience, Indonesian speakers typically start by developing the context of the topic. These findings highlight the influence of language on rhetorical structures and suggest potential applications in the development of teaching materials aimed at enhancing genre awareness and academic presentation skills among foreign language learners. 본 연구는 한국어와 인도네시아어로 진행된 TED 강연을 대상으로 수사적 단계(rhetorical moves)를 분석하고 비교하는 것을 목적으로 한다. 구두 발표 능력은 특히 학문적 맥락에서 매우 중요하며, 학생들의 주제 이해도, 의사소통 능력, 학문적 요구 충족 능력을 보여준다. TED (Technology, Entertainment, Design) 강연은 지식을 전달하고 학문적 발표 능력을 실현할 수 있는 매체로 활용된다. 지금까지 TED 강연에 대한 장르 분석은 활발히 이루어졌으나, 한국어와 인도네시아어 TED 강연의 수사적 단계를 비교한 연구는 아직 충분하지 않다. 본 연구는 Chang과 Huang의 수사적 단계 분석 틀을 바탕으로 한국어와 인도네시아어 TED 강연 각 10편씩, 총 20편을 직접 코딩하여 분석하였다. 분석 결과, Move 2(주제 소개), Move 4(주제 전개), Move 7(감사 표현)은 두 언어 모두에서 필수적으로 나타나는 단계였다. 또한 메타 수준에서 청중과 소통하거나, 발표 구조를 안내하거나, 자신의 입장을 드러내는 단계는 두 언어 모두에서 자주 나타나지 않았다. 수사적 단계의 전개 방식에서도 차이가 나타났는데, 한국어 발표자는 청중과의 관계 형성을 우선시하는 경향이 있는 반면, 인도네시아어 발표자는 주제의 맥락을 먼저 설명하는 경향이 있었다. 이러한 결과는 발표 담화에서 언어적 배경이 수사 구조에 영향을 미칠 수 있음을 보여주며, 외국어 학습자의 장르 인식과 학문적 발표 능력 향상을 위한 교육 자료 개발에 유용하게 활용될 수 있기를 기대한다.
