Abstract

Pada era digital yang semakin berkembang dengan cepat muncul berbagai permasalahan atau fenomena yang muncul terutama dalam ruang digital khusunya media sosial. Dalam konteks ini, cancel culture dipahami sebagai respons bersama dari masyarakat terhadap tindakan publik figur yang dianggap melanggar norma sosial, yang pada akhirnya mengakibatkan pengucilan atau penolakan sosial terhadap individu tersebut di dunia digital. Serta adanya influencer yang memiliki popularitas dan memiliki pengaruh yang sangat signifikan terhadap publik. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui persepsi mahasiswa Universitas Pendidikan Indonesia terhadap tindakan cancel culture di kalangan influencer sebagai kontrol. Peneliti menjadikan Mahasiswa aktif UPI Bumi Siliwangi sebagai responden yaitu sebanyak 270 orang. Penelitian ini menggunakan pendenkatan kuantitatif dengan metode analisis statistik deskriptif. Serta menggunakan teknik pengumpulan data melalui kuesioner yang telah diuji validitas dan uji reliabilitas. Temuan penelitian menunjukkan bahwa mayoritas siswa memiliki persepsi tinggi terhadap praktik budaya pembatalan sebagai metode kontrol sosial yang efektif dalam menegakkan norma-norma sosial, terutama ketika sistem hukum formal dianggap tidak memadai atau lambat dalam menangani pelanggaran etika publik. Mahasiswa percaya bahwa cancel culture dapat berfungsi sebagai sarana untuk mengekspresikan ketidaksetujuan terhadap perilaku influencer, sekaligus bertindak sebagai bentuk partisipasi aktif dalam menegakkan nilai-nilai sosial. Namun, ada juga kekhawatiran tentang potensi penyalahgunaan cancel culture yang dapat berdampak negatif pada kebebasan berekspresi dan reputasi individu tanpa proses verifikasi yang adil. Penelitian ini menekankan bahwa mahasiswa, sebagai pengguna aktif media sosial, memainkan peran penting dalam membentuk wacana publik dan turut berkontribusi pada dinamika kontrol sosial di era digital. especially in the digital space, particularly social media. In this context, cancel culture is understood as a collective response from society towards the actions of public figures deemed to violate social norms, ultimately resulting in social ostracism or rejection of the individual in the digital world. Additionally, there are influencers who have significant popularity and influence over the public. This research aims to understand the perceptions of students at Universitas Pendidikan Indonesia regarding cancel culture actions among influencers as a form of control. The researchers chose active UPI students from Bumi Siliwangi as respondents, totaling 270 individuals. This study employs a quantitative approach with descriptive statistical analysis methods, as well as data collection techniques through a questionnaire that has been tested for validity and reliability. Research findings show that the majority of students have a high perception of cancel culture practices as an effective social control method in enforcing social norms, especially when the formal legal system is deemed inadequate or slow in addressing public ethical violations. Students believe that cancel culture can serve as a means to express disapproval of influencer behavior, while also acting as a form of active participation in upholding social values. However, there are also concerns about the potential misuse of cancel culture that could negatively impact freedom of expression and individual reputations without a fair verification process. This research emphasizes that students, as active users of social media, play a crucial role in shaping public discourse and contributing to the dynamics of social control in the digital era.
