    Abstract

This study examines the similarities and differences between the Japanese adjectives atsui and usui and the Indonesian adjectives tebal and tipis from a syntactic perspective, covering structure (Moelino, 2017), function (Bloomfield 1933; Moelino 2017), category (Chomsky, 1957; Verhaar, 1982), and semantic roles (Langacker, 1991; Kridalaksana, 2002). The method used are semantic contrastive analysis based on the classification of linguistic phenomena by Koyanagi (2004), the determination of the relationship between meanings using the theory of Machida & Momiyama (1997) and the determination of figures of speech using the theory of Momiyama (1998, 2002). The data, in the form of jitsurei, were collected from corpora (nlb.ninjal.ac.jp and shonagon.ninjal.ac.jp) and online news sources in both languages (asahi.com, news.yahoo.co.jp, nhk.co.jp, nikkei.co.jp, jawapos.com, detik.com, suara.com, antaranews.com, kompas.com, and tribunnews.com). The total number of data items is 214: atsui (59), usui (51), tebal (62), and tipis (42). The adjectives atsui and tebal share six structural similarities, four syntactic functions, three categories, nine semantic roles, and five meanings; while exhibiting 23 structural differences, one functional difference, two categorical differences, four role differences, and six differences in meaning. Meanwhile, usui and tipis share six structural similarities, four syntactic functions, three categories, eight semantic roles, and six meanings; along with 24 structural differences, one functional difference, two categorical differences, three role differences, and seven differences in meaning. The observed linguistic phenomena include icchi, ketsujou, and shinki, with metaphorical and metonymic relationships found in both core and extended meanings. These findings indicate a dominance of structural differences and a balance between semantic similarity and contrast. Future studies are recommended to incorporate additional data sources such as direct conversation, magazines, novels, and other media to broaden the semantic scope.
