Abstract
This study aims to analyze the effectiveness of using an Education for Sustainable Development (ESD)-based E-module in improving students’ scientific literacy and sustainability awareness on the topic of low-carbon energy. The research method employed is a mixed-methods with embedded experimental design, where quantitative data in the form of pretest and posttest scores on scientific literacy and sustainability awareness questionnaires are analyzed primarily, while qualitative data from observations, reflections, and student responses are used to complement and strengthen the findings. The research subjects were ninth-grade students at a junior high school in Cimahi who studied low-carbon energy material using an ESD-based E-module focused on the low-carbon energy theme. The results show a significant increase in the average student scientific literacy score from 63.57 to 80.57 with a moderate N-gain of 0.61, while students’ sustainability awareness scores also increased from 4.2 to 4.4 (on a 5-point scale) with an N-gain of 0.3. The greatest improvement occurred in the aspect of making decisions based on scientific information (LS3), followed by the strengthening of scientific investigation skills (LS2) and understanding scientific phenomena (LS1). Qualitative analysis revealed that students experienced positive changes in knowledge, attitudes, and real actions related to sustainability. Overall, the findings confirm that the integration of an ESD-based E-module is highly effective in holistically developing students’ scientific literacy and sustainability awareness, making it relevant for education in the era of Society 5.0.
