    Abstract

This study aims to identify the patterns, structure, and variations of rhetorical moves and steps in hypnotherapy texts using a rhetorical moves analysis approach. The data consist of 118 transcriptions of hypnotherapy sessions, analyzed at the clause level to uncover the rhetorical structure and functional distribution of each move. The study also explores textual variations based on four major issues commonly addressed in hypnotherapy: weight loss, past trauma or bullying, fear or phobia, and anxiety or stress management. The analysis reveals seven distinct moves and 32 steps. Move 4 – guiding cognitive restructuring – is the only obligatory move present in all sessions, whereas Move 7 – embedding post-hypnotic suggestion – is optional and appears only in selected cases. In addition to the rhetorical structure, the study examines linguistic features, particularly speech act types based on Searle’s classification. A total of 123 speech acts were identified: 70 directives, 28 assertives, 18 declaratives, 4 expressives, and 3 commissives. Move 1 includes all five types, while Move 2 is exclusively composed of 36 directives. Move 3 contains 11 directives, while Move 4 presents a combination of 13 directives, 9 assertives, and 1 declarative. Move 5 features only assertives, Move 6 includes 5 declaratives, 1 expressive, and 7 directives, and Move 7 comprises 8 declaratives and 1 directive. The dominance of directive speech acts reflects the persuasive and suggestive nature of hypnotherapy texts, aligning with the communicative goals of the practice. These findings contribute to a more structured and data-driven linguistic understanding of hypnotherapy, offering valuable insights for both practitioners and researchers.
