Abstract
The study was conducted to determine ionic liquid potential of solvent-based cis-oleil-imidazolinium acetate in graphite exfoliation process into graphene that has mechanical, thermal, electrical and optical properties with good performance. Graphite that was used to produce graphene consists of three types: synthetic graphite, new battery graphite, and waste battery graphite. Graphite exfoliation study was performed using cis-oleil-imidazolinium asetat [cis-Ol-Imz][CH3COO-] ionic liquid with two exfoliation method: exfoliation using sonication and microwave energy and electrochemical exfoliation. Infrared analysis (FTIR) was used to characterize the functional group of ionic liquid, graphite before and after exfoliation process. FTIR results indicated that ionic liquid was successfully synthesized and exfoliation process was successfully performed. Exfoliation process resulted in a crystallization change, distance between layers, and crystal graphite size from exfoliation process that was based on a test using X-Ray Difraction(XRD). The characterization results of Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM) indicated that multilayer graphene was formed by ionic liquid exfoliation. The UV-Vis analysis indicated that there was a π to π* transition as a result of graphite exfoliation. Graphite from the result of exfoliation also has a high thermal decomposition point of 5500C that was tested using Thermogravimetry-Diferential Analysis (TG-DTA). The electrical properties of graphite from exfoliation result are a requisite in the electronics industry so the measurement of conductivity of graphite before and after the exfoliation process was performed using Electrochemical Impedance Spectroscopy (EIS) method. The conductivity of synthetic graphite, new battery graphite, and waste battery graphite after exfoliation process are 11.58 x 10-1 S.cm-1, 9.32 x 10-1 S.cm-1, and 7.96 x 10-1 S.cm-1. These results increased 10 times, 2 times, and 4 times before the graphite exfoliation process.
