Abstract

This study highlights the important role of parents in children's higher education decision-making, which is influenced by family, economic, and cultural factors and has an impact on work-family conflict. This study aims to analyze the relationship between parental roles, occupational factors, and various other parental characteristics and students' college choices. The study used a quantitative method with a cross-sectional survey approach involving 1,000 students in West Java as a sample. We used the Structural Equation Modeling-Partial Least Square (SEM-PLS) model to look at the effects of different factors, such as parents' job, gender, age, level of education, involvement, communication, and emotional state. The results showed that parental roles had a significant influence on the choice of majors in the fields of Economics and Business (p < 0.05) but did not show a significant influence in the fields of Health Sciences, Science and Technology, and Social Sciences and Humanities. The parental- occupational factor emerged as the most significant variable, indicating that exposure and expectations instilled by parental occupations play an important role in shaping children's career decisions. In contrast, other factors such as gender, age, educational background, and communication do not have a significant influence on the choice of a field of study. This study suggests that a combination of external factors, such as parents' occupations, and the child's intrinsic motivation influence children's choices. In addition, comprehensive career guidance services need to be strengthened to help students choose educational paths that suit individual needs and the demands of a dynamic job market. Further research is recommended to explore the relationship between peer influence, personal interests, and social environment in determining children's choice of majors.
