Abstract

Children are often become victims of their parents divorce. Many studies have shown that such situation can lead to negative effects on children, including symptoms of depression and suicidal ideation. This study aims to examine the role of depression symptoms in mediating the influence of self-compassion on suicidal ideation in adolescents with divorced parents in West Java. A quantitative approach was employed in this study, using a non-probability sampling technique, specifically purposive sampling. The participants included 385 adolescents aged 18-21 years with divorced parents in West Java. The instruments used in this study were three measurement tools: the Self-Compassion Scale (SCS) designed by Neff (2003), the Beck Scale for Suicidal Ideation (BSSI) developed by Beck (1979), and the Center Epidemiologic Studies Depression Scale Revised-10 (CESD-R-10) developed by Hariz et al. (2014). The data were analyzed using classical assumption tests, independent sample test, and hypothesis testing with IBM SPSS 23 software. The data analysis techniques applied were simple linear regression, multiple linear regression, and the Sobel test. The results of this study indicate that: (1) there is a significant negative influence (18.7%) between self-compassion and suicidal ideation; (2) there is a significant negative influence (17.1%) between self-compassion and suicidal ideation; (3) there is a significant positive influence (57.7%) between depression symptoms and suicidal ideation; and (4) depression symptoms partially mediate the effect of self-compassion on suicidal ideation in adolescents with divorced parents in West Java. Future research is recommended to focus on a specific group within a particular demographic aspect and to further examine how local cultural values influence participants.
