Abstract

Computational Thinking (CT) is a crucial 21st-century skill utilized for systematic problem-solving, including in mathematics education. Learning style is one of the factors that influence students' CT. One of them is the VARK (Visual, Auditory, Read/Write, Kinesthetics) learning style model, namely individual preferences in learning new information based on multisensory modalities, namely vision (visual), hearing (auditory), reading (read/write), and movement (kinesthetic). This study aims to explore the CT abilities of junior high school students based on their learning style preference according to the VARK model in solving CT tasks. The research employs a qualitative approach with a case study design and phenomenological perspective, involving 29 ninth-grade students from a junior high school in Bandung. Data were collected through Bebras challenge tests, VARK learning style questionnaires, and in-depth interviews. The results of the study showed that students' CT abilities still needed to be improved, where the most dominant CT aspect that could be fulfilled was decomposition, namely the ability to identify information and break down problems into small parts. In contrast, the algorithmic, abstraction, and pattern recognition aspects were not fully mastered. Students almost fulfilled the algorithmic aspect but struggled with abstraction and pattern recognition. The strategies used varied, with the dominance of ordered lists compared to visualization. Students tended to be more adept at planning steps to completion than carrying them out to completion. Single preference students tended to be able to fulfill decomposition, with auditory students being the best in pattern recognition and read/write students being superior in abstraction. Meanwhile, bimodal students performed best in fulfilling all aspects of CT, especially abstraction and pattern recognition, compared to the single, trimodal, and quadmodal groups. In contrast, quadmodal students showed the lowest performance in all aspects of CT.
