Abstract

TEDx Talks has emerged as one of the digital platforms featuring expert insights and innovative ideas available to a global audience. One of the most popular themes is the “how-to,” in which the speaker puts forward a compelling idea to persuade the audience to take a particular action or adopt a specific belief by presenting it in a series of stages that set up and resolve their expectations. This study investigates how the five most popular “how-to” TEDx talks are staged and how the meaning of each stage is developed. This qualitative case study draws on Hasan’s (1985) theory of generic structure potential combined with Mann & Thompson’s (1987) rhetorical structure theory and theories proposed by Martin (1994) on macro genre and Martin & Rose (2008) on genre relations. The data, in the form of transcripts of the selected videos, were obtained from TEDx YouTube channel and further analyzed by identifying how the talks are staged and how genres develop meaning potentials through their staged structure. It is found that the talks are structured around four obligatory stages, namely Hook, Contention, Advice, and Closure, and one optional stage labeled Demonstration. The nuclearity of the talk is held by the Advice stage, in which speakers address the “how-to” message. The analysis also reveals a prevalent use of various genres in the instructional, narrative, expository, and explanatory families, such as procedure, observation, analytical exposition, hortatory exposition, and factorial explanation, and non-genre items, such as rhetorical questions and calls to action, which speakers embed to extend the meaning potential of each stage.
