Abstract

Interpersonal meaning in Sundanese has a different system with English, Indonesian, and Tagalog (Martin, 1990). Most of typological studies tended to focus on structural perspective in the context of regional language but only several typological studies discussed functionally in that context. Specifically, the study of interpersonal meaning has been discussing in many kind of context but it is still rare in the context of Sundanese. This current study aims to identify the interpersonal meaning based on tenor aspect, mood system, and modality through the analysis of speech function, mood types, and mood structure in Sundanese (Halliday & Matthiessen, 2014). This study employs descriptive qualitative approach and corpus-based method. The corpus is spoken texts that compiled from numerous videos of podcast channels and rapidly identified through AntConc application. Further, the data is analysed by HBB and HBS techniques. The findings of this study show that (1) partikel “teh, tea, atuh, and mah” becomes a markedness to realize the speech function of statement in Sundanese which meant as emphasis, comparation, and intimacy. Moreover, (2) the word “naha” has a double meaning and becomes markedness for interrogative mood of polar and W-H. (3) Mood structure in Sundanese formulated by subject^modal^predikator which the finiteness in Sundanese realises implisitly and tends to be merged with subject element in the MOOD, and (4) the typological pattern of interpersonal meaning in Sundanese has a similar function and mood system with Indonesia language. This research findings refer to Halliday (1994) in the representation of the interpersonal meaning in Sundanese by indicating an implicit finite (Kurniawan, 2013; Kurniawan & Davies, 2005). As implication, this study hopefully contributes to the writer of podcast script and the linguistic researcher of functional typology in developing the research focus such as the system of formality, polarity, modality, vacation, participant (Shin, 2018), and appraisal (Martin & White, 2005; Gunawan & Putri, 2018; Haryati, dkk., 2021) in Sundanese or compare the interpersonal system of Sundanese with English and similar austronesian language typologically.
