Abstract

Carbon dioxide (CO2) is one of the largest greenhouse gases in the earth's atmosphere which has increased impacts due to human activities and results in global climate change. Mangrove forests provide a carbon sink function by absorbing CO2 from the atmosphere through photosynthesis and storing carbon in sediments. Therefore, it is important to understand the spatial distribution of carbon stored in mangrove ecosystems. This study describes efforts to map carbon stocks in mangrove forests using remote sensing technology. The use of spatial data and Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) image processing techniques as well as linear regression modeling were used to explain the variance of mangrove carbon stocks. Sediment types in the form of mud and diurnal tidal patterns make the Paluh Kurau mangrove forest area a growth medium for Avicennia sp, Bruguiera sp, Nypa sp, Rhizophora sp, and Sonneratia sp species with diverse vegetation density. High vegetation covers an area of 1,371.55 ha, medium vegetation covers an area of 509.73 ha, and low vegetation covers an area of 151.93 ha. The results showed carbon storage of 136,192.12 tons with a coefficient of determination of linear equations of 0.839 for above-ground biomass and 0.813 for coefficient of determination of linear equations underground biomass. So that the resulting equation modeling can work well for estimating carbon stocks stored in the Paluh Kurau Mangrove Forest.
