Abstract
This research aims to develop an empirically effective cognitive restructuring counseling model for enhancing students' academic resilience. The research and development (R&D) method was employed in this study. The research participants consisted of students enrolled in the Faculty of Islamic Education and Teacher Training at Universitas Islam Negeri Sumatera Utara, Medan, representing a population of 11 different academic programs. The research findings indicate that, overall, students exhibit a low level of academic resilience. These findings suggest a negative level of academic resilience among students. However, there are still students falling within the categories of high and very high resilience. The cognitive restructuring counseling model developed involves several components, including rationale, intervention objectives, service targets, implementation stages, counselor competencies, success indicators, and evaluation. This model is designed to assist students in understanding and changing their thought patterns to achieve positive changes in their emotions and behaviors, particularly in an academic context. Data analysis employed statistical tests, particularly the Wilcoxon test, resulting in findings that cognitive restructuring counseling is effective in enhancing students' academic resilience. Significant improvements were observed in all three aspects of academic resilience, particularly in the aspects of perseverance and reflecting and adaptive help-seeking, while the aspect of negative affect and emotional response exhibited significant decreases due to the negative nature of the statements within that aspect. This research has important implications, including the potential to improve students' academic resilience, the importance of the cognitive restructuring counseling approach, the role of counselors in helping students change negative thought patterns, and the need for counseling services that focus on developing academic resilience. The cognitive restructuring counseling model can be implemented in the environment of the State Islamic University of North Sumatra in Medan to assist students in overcoming academic pressure. The research provides deep insights into the importance of developing academic resilience in students through cognitive restructuring counseling and demonstrates the effectiveness of this approach in enhancing academic resilience.
