Abstract

The ability to solve problems and think spatially is an important competency for students. The tendency of geography learning to emphasize cognitive aspects is one of the factors causing low spatial thinking abilities. The cognitive aspect is the foundation of weakness because analytical sharpness is not formed which can be used to overcome spatial problems. This research aims to analyze the differences and influence of the problem based learning model assisted by Story Maps on spatial thinking skills. The method used was experimental research with a pretest-posttest control group design using a quantitative approach, with a sample of class XI-IPS 1 as the control class and class XI-IPS 2 as the experimental class. Spatial thinking skills are measured based on the indicators comparison, aura, region, hierarchy, transition, analogy, pattern and association. Data analysis uses normality tests, homogeneity tests, and non-parametric statistical hypothesis tests. The research results show that the implementation of the problem based learning model with the help of Story Maps is 80% in the good category. The gain score for the experimental class was higher compared to the control class. Based on the results of the hypothesis test, Asymp. sig (2-tailed) is <0.001, or less than the sig value. <0.005 then H0 is rejected and H1 is accepted. Differences in activities in the learning process, exercises with the help of media, and PBL syntax are factors that influence students' spatial thinking skills. So it can be concluded that there is an influence of using the problem based learning model assisted by Story Maps on students' spatial thinking abilities in geography subjects. Research related to the problem based learning model assisted by Story Maps can be applied to different variables and different geographic material.
