Abstract

This research was motivated by the low ability of students’ reading comprehension, which was found through observation at SDN 4 Ciamis. The reason is the lack of innovation and creativity of educators in the learning process, so that students’ reading comprehension skills are still relatively low. To overcome this problem, researchers use learning models and learning media that can facilitate students in learning. The learning model used is Cooperative Integrated Reading and Composition (CIRC) with the help of picture series media. The purpose of this study was to improve students’ reading comprehension skills. The method used is Classroom Action Research (PTK) which follows the stages of planning, action, observation, and reflection according to Stephen Kemmis and Taggart’s model. The participants in this study were all fourth grade students at SDN 4 Ciamis, and the research was conducted in two cycles. Data collection techniques include observing students’ learning activities, APKG assessment, and tests. The results showed that the level of students’ reading ability in the pre-cycle was 48.73%, increased in the first cycle to 72.4%, and increased again in the second cycle to 82.4%. Thus, it can be concluded that the Cooperative Integrated Reading and Composition (CIRC) learning model with the support of picture series media is effective in improving students’ reading comprehension skills.
