Abstract

The present study entitled An Analysis of Feminism in Maleficent: Mistress of Evil (2019) aims to examine the portrayal of the feminist characteristics of Maleficent as the main female character. The study employs a qualitative approach and textual analysis since this study focuses on in-depth and descriptive analysis of Maleficent from evidence in the film text. Framed by the theory of care-focused feminism (Gilligan, 1982) and film theory (Bordwell, Thompson, and Smith, 2016) to achieve the aims, the study found Maleficent's portrayal of care-focused feminism can be seen from the stages she experienced. First, in the pre-conventional stage, Maleficent is portrayed as a woman who comes to be a mother. Second, in the conventional stage, Maleficent is portrayed as a responsible woman and selfless. Last, in the post-conventional, Maleficent is portrayed as a fair and firm woman who builds harmony for those around her. In the study, the main female character is caring for others and not only fighting for her rights but for other people, both women and men. Thus, the study implies that by portraying this kind of feminism, the film offers a different kind of female character for young viewers.
