Abstract

Sebanyak 24 ekor mencit (Mus musculus) jantan dikelompokkan menjadi enam kelompok perlakuan yaitu kelompok kontrol (diberi akuades), kelompok perlakuan P1 (ekstrak kulit semangka 140mg/kgBB), kelompok perlakuan P2 (ekstrak kulit semangka 280mg/kgBB), kelompok perlakuan P3 (ekstrak kulit semangka 420mg/kgBB), kelompok perlakuan P4 (ekstrak kulit semangka 560mg/kgBB) dan kelompok perlakuan P5 (ekstrak kulit semangka 700mg/kgBB). Fertility is the ability of an individual or a population to produce offspring. Fertility can occur when the quality of the produced sperm is good. Sperm quality can be observed based on the quantity of sperm, sperm morphology, and sperm motility. Watermelon rind contains a variety of active compounds, including flavonoids, alkaloids, tannins, saponins, and steroids. Compounds such as saponins, tannins, flavonoids, and alkaloids found in watermelon rind can reduce fertility levels by disrupting reproductive functions. This research aims to determine the potential of watermelon (Citrullus lanatus) rind as an antifertility agent in male mice. A total of 24 male mice (Mus musculus) were divided into six treatment groups: control group (given distilled water), treatment group P1 (watermelon rind extract at 140mg/kgBW), treatment group P2 (watermelon rind extract at 280mg/kgBW), treatment group P3 (watermelon rind extract at 420mg/kgBW), treatment group P4 (watermelon rind extract at 560mg/kgBW), and treatment group P5 (watermelon rind extract at 700mg/kgBW). The research results were analyzed using One Way ANOVA and followed by Tukey's Post Hoc test. The watermelon rind extract did not affect the body weight of the mice, but it decreased testis weight and sperm quality by reducing the quantity of produced sperm, decreasing the number of normal sperm, increasing the number of abnormal sperm, and reducing sperm motility. These findings demonstrate that treatment group P5 (watermelon rind extract at 700mg/kgBW) has potential as an antifertility agent
