Abstract

This study was aimed at investigating the language learning strategies used by gender. The study was conducted in Indonesia University of Education where 100 male and female college students were considered to be the participants of this study. This study was a descriptive quantitative study which applied Strategy Inventory of Language Learning (SILL) version 7.0 by Oxford (1990). The Cronbach alpha design was employed to check the reliability of the instrument. The reliability value of this questionnaire was 0.875 which was considered being a good degree of reliability. Meanwhile, to analysis the data, this study applied Independent t-test to test the hypothesis of this study. The result of this study revealed that there was a significant difference of language learning strategies applied by male and female college students (t= 2.694*, p= 0.08 (p<.05)). The mean frequency of male college students in overall strategy was 1.64, and the mean frequency of female college students was 1.78; therefore, male college students presented less frequently in using overall strategy than did female college students.
