Abstract

Domestication and foreignization are two basic translation strategies termed by American translation theorist Lawrence Venuti. Generally speaking, domestication is a target language (TL)-oriented translation in which the source language (SL) culture is replaced with the TL culture making the translation recognizable and easy for the target readers. On the other hand, foreignization refers to SL-oriented translation where the SL cultural values are preserved making them noticeable to the TL readers. In consideration of the fact that films can also represent cultural values of a particular community, Venuti’s theories on domestication and foreignization can be applied to all forms of film translation. Films, like other written texts, may contain various kinds of names, idioms, slang expressions, and so on, all of these can function as culture-specific terms (CST) that are not always a part of target language system, and can be neither domesticated nor foreignized by the translator. This study is aimed at finding whether English CST in the Indonesian subtitle of Ratatouille are foreignized or domesticated and the quality of CST translation in the subtitle. The analysis compared English CST in four categories of Newmark’s CST classification with their translations in the Indonesian subtitle of the movie and, according to the translation strategies can be placed in the model of foreignization-domestication continuum suggested by Jan Pedersen. Moreover, the quality of CST translation is assessed by giving questionnaires to three persons who have watched the movie. The findings show that there were 204 CST found in the movie. Referring to Newmark’s CST classification, there were 8 terms of Ecology, 118 terms of Material culture, 70 terms of Social culture and 8 terms of Gestures and Habits. Material culture is the most frequently category appeared in the movie. Furthermore, from the ten translation strategies in Pedersen’s (2005) foreignization-domestication continuum, the findings showed that Preservation is the most frequently used strategy in translating CST in Ratatouille with 68 cases or (33.33%). From the results of translation strategies analysis, it can be claimed that CST translation in Indonesian subtitles of cartoon movie Ratatouille are mainly foreignized with 111 of them are foreignized in the Indonesian subtitle of Ratatouille, while 93 others are domesticated. This indicates that the translator aimed to keep the foreign identity of source language and the originality of the movie. Furthermore, all three reviewers agree that the quality of CST translation in Indonesian subtitle of Ratatouille is in Good level with 132 points from 225 total point questionnaires.
