Abstract

Newspaper is one of mass medias providing informative report of political or social issues that happen in the country. What becomes the concern is that what is written in the newspaper is not a mere article or a mere information feeder. In fact, the article can bring about casual effect such as a change of perspective for the communication participants or the readers of the newspaper. This is in line with what Fairclough (2003) suggests that texts should have causal effect upon the change of what people believe (belief, attitude, etc.), how people act, and the social relation. Thus, it indicates that media can have the power to contribute to the change of what people think through what is presented in the text or the article. This study is entitled THE STUDY OF KOMPAS’ AND REPUBLIKA’S TENDENCIES IN REPORTING THE TRIAL OF ABU BAKAR BA’ASYIR. The study is aimed at providing the analysis of Kompas and Republika that is aimed at finding out the way two different newspapers represent the trial of Abu Bakar Ba’asyir. It is also aimed at revealing the tendencies behind the representations by Kompas and Republika in their articles. The study employs descriptive qualitative methods through the stages of description, interpretation, and explanation with the use of Systemic Functional Grammar (SFG) approach proposed by Halliday (2004) covering transitivity and nominalization, and the Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA) proposed by Fairclough (2003) as well as the social event and its aspects identification. The findings of the analysis show that Kompas tends to agree that Ba’asyir is a terrorist criminal by describing all the terrorism acts done by Ba’asyir and his relations. Meanwhile, Republika describes more about the activity and the feelings of the supporters of Abu Bakar Ba’asyir rather than to describe the terrorism acts done by Ba’asyir. It also represents Abu Bakar Ba’asyir as an Ustadz rather than as a terrorist criminal. It leads to the idea that Republika tends to be on Abu Bakar Ba’asyir side.
