Abstract
Translation has been human’s necessity since it connects people who have different languages. People do not only enjoy the translation works from English into Indonesian in a form of text books but they can also enjoy the translation of literary works like a novel. Novel is a literary work which consists of dialogues which have three functions; Expressive, Informative, and Vocative. The function of vocative is to cause or prevent overt actions. This research analyzes the translation methods and procedures applied in the translation of vocative dialogues in the novel “To Kill A Mockingbird” using the descriptive qualitative method. To answer the research questions, the writer analyzed the methods and procedures used to translate vocative dialogues by using the guidelines and principles of translation proposed by Newmark (1988) as the framework in the process of analysis. The result of the analysis shows that there were 6 translation methods and 12 translation procedures found in the vocative dialogues. However, Communicative method places as the most frequent in the distribution of translation methods with 64%, whereas Idiomatic method seems to be the least frequent method with 1%. Regarding the procedures in translating vocative dialogues, Paraphrase has the highest rank with 25% whereas Couplet text is the smallest one with 2%. Therefore it can be concluded that communicative method may be considered as the best method in translating vocative dialogues because this methods can cause the addressee to react, to think, or to feel as the speaker’s intention.
