Abstract

The increasing use of social media brings significant benefits in expanding access to information and facilitating civic engagement. However, concerns about the impact of filter bubbles have led to individuals being trapped in narrow and polarized information ecosystems. This research aims to analyze the strengthening of civic engagement through digital literacy for digital natives, which users, observers, and policymakers can utilize to develop digital literacy in Civic Education, with an awareness of the importance of facilitating the participation and contribution of digital natives in social and political issues for the advancement of democracy. This study employs the Grounded Theory method developed by Glaser and Strauss, involving 15 Digital Natives from 3 universities in Bandung, two digital literacy advocacy organizations, and two experts in civic engagement/digital literacy. Data collection techniques encompass interviews, observations, and documentary studies. Data analysis is conducted using NVivo. The research findings are as follows: (1) The reinforcement of digital literacy for Digital Natives includes the ability to access information, analyze it, and overcome the risks of filter bubbles. Interestingly, the study finds that filter bubbles are sometimes personalized by individuals and influenced by authorities, potentially leading to polarization. (2) Integrating information and data literacy as parts of digital literacy is crucial in sharing information on social media to enhance civic engagement. (3) Using the internet with civic engagement can lead to utopia or dystopia. This outcome depends on how digital natives can behave wisely, supported by digital literacy, to strengthen the quality of their involvement. (4) The integration of Civic Education and Digital Literacy creates the concept of the "New Good Citizen," combining digital literacy to enhance online civic engagement that is applied in real life.
