Abstract

Entitled ‘A Critical Discourse Analysis of Obama’s Speeches Commenting on the intervention of USA in the Libyan Civil War’, the present study aims to reveal how Obama represents Ghadafi in his speeches and Obama’s attitudes toward the intervention of USA in the Libyan war. The present study employs the concepts of Halliday’s Functional Grammar, CDA approach with Fairclough’s theoretical framework, and Fairclough’s theory of evaluation. It was found that Obama’s speeches tend to represent Ghadafi as unimportant based on the occurrences of Ghadafi as Topical Theme. Furthermore, Ghadafi is represented as a dictator, a violator, a killer, and a terrorist based on the lexical word choices. Meanwhile, the attitudes of Obama are identified from the occurrences of the United States as Topical Theme, transitivity, the lexical words choices, and Obama’s desirability and undesirability in evaluation theory. It can be concluded that Obama shows some attitudes through his speeches, namely accentuating those actions taken by the United States protecting Libyan people, condemning Ghadafi’s regime, supporting the Libyan people, creating public’s perceptions of Ghadafi’s images negatively, and blaming the Ghadafi’s regime and justifying the intervention.
