Abstract

This paper entitled Extension of Meaning in Radio Broadcasters’ Utterances is aimed to investigate the distributions of extended meanings in three radio stations in Bandung (Dahlia 101, 5 FM, Oz 103, 1 FM and Rase 102, 3 FM), the extended meanings of some words that appear concurrently in those radio stations, and listeners’ attitudes toward the occurrences of extended meanings. This study employs a descriptive qualitative method. The data sources of this study were three programs from those radio stations: Dahlia Indonesia Asik, Oz Papih Mamih, and Good Morning Bandung. The collected data were obtained by recording those programs and interviewing listeners of those radio stations. The recorded data were transcribed whereas the interviewed data were analyzed accordingly to listeners’ opinions relating to the occurrences of extended meanings. Based on the analysis result, it was found that there were the differences of extended meaning distributions among those radio stations. Teenager radio station (Oz 103, 1 FM) produced 45.96% of extended meanings. It was, then, followed by adult and teenager radio station (Dahlia 101, 5 FM) which was producing 35.87 % of extended meanings. In contrast, adult radio station (Rase 102, 3 FM) only produced 18.16% of extended meanings. These were due to the segment of radio stations that influenced the language choice used by broadcasters. Moreover, the findings also show that the extended meanings were found in these following words: cing, bu, kali, keren, seru, gila, and edan. Those words had extended meanings that were not available in dictionaries yet. Regarding to listeners’ attitudes, it shows that all selected listeners had a positive attitude to the occurrences of extended meanings because they could generate excitement for live broadcast.
