Abstract

Textbooks in teaching English have become the topic of many researches. Many studies concern to investigate the advantage and limitation of textbook. They show that several private textbooks in Indonesia have various limitations in many aspects. Consequently, the adaptation process of textbooks should be a main consideration of using textbooks as teaching material. This study investigates what textbooks adaptation process in teaching speaking done by a teacher. The study observes classroom activities in a vocational school in Subang focused on speaking. To support the data collected this study conducts interviewing to the teacher. Moreover, this study also analyzes her lesson plan and teaching material. The data are re analyzed by textbook adaptation process theory by Richard (2001) and points of view of the classroom observation were adapted from teaching technique theory and teaching speaking theory by Brown (2001), Nunan (2000,2004), and Hughes (2002). The study shows that teacher may modify the content of textbooks, reorganize the task or the content of textbooks, and address omission as the textbooks adaptation criteria. The teacher assumes that by doing some adaptation, the students were helped to understand the lesson and even to get more contextual language feature based on their field of study. As a conclusion, textbooks may be adapted by teacher regarding her background, the characteristic of students and the teaching methodology employed in classroom activities. Moreover, the quality of textbooks adaptation process may affect the quality of the teaching learning process in the classroom.
