Abstract

The key terms of the study are cognitive learning strategies and reading comprehension. The study was aimed at investigating the effect of cognitive learning strategies in improving students reading comprehension and to find out the reading difficulties faced by the students. The study applied quasi-experimental method by using non-equivalent control group pre-test and post-test design. The study was conducted in one of state vocational school in Bandung and involved two classes of the second grade which have been chosen based on school recommendation. One class was taken as the experimental group and the other class was taken as the control group. The findings indicated that the cognitive learning strategies are effective in improving students reading comprehension. As indicated by a statistical result of posttest score of the experimental group (M=80.24) and the control group (M=73.03) are different. It is also supported by the probability (equal variance assumed) is lower than level of significance (0.001 < 0.05). Therefore, the null hypothesis is rejected. Moreover, the result of the questionnaire revealed that the difficulty mostly faced by students is lack of vocabulary knowledge. Furthermore, the least faced by the students is lack of familiarity with the subject matter and inadequate use of effective reading strategies. Kata kunci dalam penelitian ini adalah strategi belajar kognitif dan pemahaman membaca (cognitive learning strategies and reading comprehension). Peneltian ini dimaksudkan untuk mengetahui pengaruh dari strategi belajar kognitif dalam meningkatkan pemahaman siswa dalam membaca dan juga untuk mengetahui kesulitan membaca yang dialami oleh siswa. Penelitian ini menerapkan metode quasi eksperimen dengan menggunakan pretrst dan post test. Peneliatian ini dilaksanakan di sebuah sekolah menengah kejuruan di Bandung dan melibatkan dua kelas dari kelas XII yang telah dipilih berdasarkan rekomendasi dari sekolah. Satu kelas dipilh sebagai grup eksperimen dan satu kelas dipilh sebagai grup control. Hasil penemuan mengindikasikan bahwa strategi belajar kognitif efektif ddalam meningkatkan pemahaman siswa dalam membaca. Sebagaimana diindikasikan oleh perbedaan hasil penghitungan statistik dari post test dari kedua grup eksperimen (M=80.24) dan control grup (M=73.03). Hal ini juga didukung oleh nilai kemungkinan yang lebih rendah dari level siginifikansi (0.0001 < 0.05). Oleh karena itu, hipotesis awal ditolak. Selanjutnya, hasil dari kuisioner menunjukan bahawa kesulitan mebaca yang paling banyak dihadapi oleh siswa adalah kurangnya penguuasaan kosa kata. Sedangkan, yang paling sedidkit dihadapi siswa adalah kurang pemahaman mengenai apa yang sedang dibaca dan juga kurangnya pengguaan startegi membca yang efektif.
