Abstract

This study aims to investigate a correlation between students’ ability in comprehending Indonesian text and their ability in comprehending English text. This study involved 30 year ten students which were voluntarily chosen as research participants at SMA Laboratorium-Percontohan UPI Bandung. Questionnaire and achievement test were employed to obtain data needed. Data from questionnaire were analyzed to identify students’ preferences in reading Indonesian and English texts, while data from achievement test were analyzed to find out students’ reading ability in both languages and also to find out the correlation between students’ ability in reading Indonesian and English texts. The result shows that the correlation coefficient of 0.783 is significant at level 0.05. It indicates that there is a strong correlation between students’ ability in comprehending Indonesian text and English text. In other words, by having a good score in reading Indonesian text, students can also acquire a good score in reading English text, and vice versa. It is thus recommended that English teachers should be aware of the use of language in class, and to enhance their understanding of the benefits of using Indonesian in English classes.
