Abstract

This paper is entitled “The Use of Narrative Texts in an EFL Junior High School Classroom to Increase Students’ Reading Skill”. The objective of this research was to investigate the influence of reading narrative texts on junior high school students reading skill. The research was carried out in the eight grade of SMPN 3 Bandung. Students were randomly selected and assigned to two different groups, which was the experimental and control group. Due to several factors, only 32 students of each group were chosen to be the sample of this research. The experimental group received treatment by implementing narrative texts as their sole source for reading material, while the control group uses various kinds of texts. The course of experiment took about one month (eight meetings). At the beginning of the research, the researcher handed out a pre-test for both groups. The pre-test was intended to find out the initial reading skill of both groups before receiving any treatments. After receiving treatments for eight meetings, a post-test was administered to both groups. The post-test was intended to monitor any change or improvement on the samples reading skill. After data were obtained, the researcher conducted the paired T-test model to investigate the outcome of the treatments. The analysis outcome of the groups showed that the experimental groups’ reading skill have developed significantly, while the control group remained stagnant. The result revealed that reading narrative texts do have an influence on junior high school students reading skill.
