Abstract

Since English begins to be taught to elementary students in Indonesia, teaching English spelling to them has become a significant issue. However, there are no specific methods in teaching English spelling to elementary students. Thus, this study was aimed to investigate the activities, media and assessments employed by teacher in teaching English spelling to young learners. The study was descriptive and used qualitative approach. It was conducted to the three English teachers in SD Al-Irhaam Global Islamic School, Bandung. The data were collected by videotaping, observations, and interview. After collecting the data, they were analyzed by coding and categorizing to answer the research questions. The result of the study suggested there were four activities used, namely (1) practicing, (2) drilling, (3) exercising, and (4) playing games. Practicing was the activity which was used mostly by teachers. There were also five kinds of media such (1) whiteboard, (2) worksheet (3) multimedia, (4) games, and (5) story. Whiteboard was the medium that was used mostly by teachers. Finally, there were two kinds of assessments employed, namely oral and written assessment. Oral was the assessment which was used mostly by teachers. As the conclusion, the teachers frequently employed practicing as the most used activities, whiteboard as the most used medium and oral as the most used assessment in teaching English spelling to young learners. The teachers also might not fully pay attention to the variety of methods and students’ characteristics. Therefore, the teachers are suggested to consider the selection of activities, media, and assessments according to the types of methods and students’ characteristics
