Abstract

The paper entitled “The Study of Word Formations in Bahasa Text Messages” aims at observing the word formation processes in Short Message Service (SMS) as well as discovering the usage frequencies. This research also investigates the accommodation of the new word formations in Bahasa vocabulary which are indicated in Kamus Besar Bahasa Indonesia or KBBI (2005) entry. A hundred SMS from September to December 2009 were taken as the data. The analysis was done by using a Qualitative Descriptive method based on Yule (1996), Kridalaksana (2007), O’grady and Guzman (1996), and Huddleston and Pullum (2002) theories of word formation processes. Kamus Besar Bahasa Indonesia (2005) was also used to check whether the word formations were accommodated in the entry. The results of the analysis show that there are 12 word formation processes found in SMS. Clipping is the most frequently used process in SMS, followed by multiple processes and borrowing. Interestingly, large quantity of the unacquainted words from the theories appeared in SMS. These various words were created in order to organize the SMS user’s sentences in the limited message space. Furthermore, out of 571word formations, only 37 words are accommodated as Bahasa vocabulary by KBBI (2005) entry. The rest of words (534 words) which are not accommodated by KBBI (2005) might be created due to the linguistic prerogative of the communicator. They were present in informal situation and yet, they have not been codified by Bahasa Center as the standardized-language. Several factors lead to the creation of the new terms in the messages, namely; the context of situation and the domains of language use performed by the communicators; the limitation of character space in the message; and the need to be economical in using SMS. Finally, it can be concluded that several word formation processes were used in the SMS as the communication needs. Yet, not all of the terms are accommodated as vocabulary as indicated in KBBI (2005).
