Abstract

This study has a title “The Realization of Politeness Strategies by Female and Male English Language Learners When Expressing Disagreement: A Case Study in the Department of English Education of Indonesia University of Education. The purpose of this study is to investigate the realizations of politeness strategy for disagreement by female and male English language learners, to find out the most common types strategy used by them, and to examine the extent of influence affected by the three social variables - social distance, power relation, and degree of imposition - and how they influence on such realizations. Data have been taken through questionnaire, discourse completion test (DCT) and interview, involving 40 students (20 females and 20 males) from class 2005 of the Department of English Education of UPI (Indonesia University of Education). Brown and Levinson’s (1987) politeness strategies have been used in the process of analyzing the obtained data. The study reveals that female and male English language learners have realized all four types of politeness strategy: positive politeness, negative politeness, bald on-record politeness, and off-record politeness, with negative politeness as the most frequent strategy used by female and male English language learners. In addition, in terms of 3 social variables –social distance, relative power, and ranking of imposition- taken into account in performing politeness strategy for disagreement by female and male English language learners, the result shows that all those social factors are intertwined. The conclusion of this study indicates that in expressing politeness strategy for disagreement, affected to the three social variables, both female and male respondents tend to perform negative politeness strategy.
