    Abstract

    Keterlibatan siswa dianggap sebagai faktor penting dalam pembelajaran bahasa Inggris, terutama bagi siswa EFL, karena mempengaruhi seberapa aktif dan bermakna mereka berpartisipasi dalam proses pembelajaran. Dengan semakin berkembangnya penggunaan teknologi, berbagai platform digital diimplementasikan di kelas bahasa untuk mendukung kegiatan pembelajaran yang mendorong keterlibatan siswa. Namun, studi yang berkaitan dengan penggunaan platform digital dalam mendukung keterlibatan siswa, khususnya di tingkat sekolah menengah pertama, masih terbatas. Oleh karena itu, berdasarkan teori keterlibatan siswa dari Fredricks et al. (2004), penelitian ini bertujuan untuk menyelidiki keterlibatan perilaku, emosional, dan kognitif siswa dalam kegiatan pembelajaran bahasa Inggris yang menggunakan platform digital, dengan melibatkan siswa kelas sembilan sebagai partisipan. Data dikumpulkan secara kualitatif melalui observasi kelas, mengamati bagaimana 29 siswa terlibat di dalam kelas, serta wawancara semi-terstruktur dengan 9 siswa terpilih. Temuan penelitian menunjukkan bahwa penggunaan platform digital mendukung beragam pola keterlibatan siswa. Secara perilaku, tampilan visual dan fitur platform digital mendorong siswa untuk fokus selama kegiatan pembelajaran dan berpartisipasi aktif. Kegembiraan dan perasaan senang muncul ketika siswa berinteraksi dengan platform digital dan berpartisipasi aktif dalam kegiatan pembelajaran, bersamaan dengan kebingungan dan kecemasan yang muncul selama mengerjakan tugas-tugas yang menantang. Keterlibatan kognitif muncul melalui respons siswa dan meninjau umpan balik yang disediakan oleh platform, yang menunjukkan pemahaman dan pemaknaan terhadap materi pembelajaran, serta siswa juga menunjukkan upaya dan penggunaan strategi untuk mengatasi kesulitan dan menujukkan performa yang baik dalam tugas. Studi ini menunjukkan bahwa penggunaan beragam platform digital dalam pembelajaran bahasa Inggris dapat mendukung keterlibatan siswa secara positif jika diterapkan dengan cermat. Student engagement is considered a valuable factor in English language learning, particularly for EFL students, as it affects how actively and meaningfully they participate in the learning process. With the growing use of technology, various digital platforms are implemented in language classrooms to support learning activities that foster student engagement. However, limited studies have explored the implementation of digital platforms in supporting student engagement particularly at the junior high school level. Therefore, drawing on the student engagement framework of Fredricks et al. (2004), this study aims to investigate behavioral, emotional, and cognitive engagement of students in English learning activities that use digital platforms and how the platforms support engagement, involving ninth-grade students as participants. Data was collected qualitatively through classroom observations, observing how 29 students engaged in the classroom along with semi-structured interviews with 9 selected students. The findings reveal that the use of digital platforms supported diverse engagement patterns. Behaviorally, visual aids and features of digital platforms foster attention throughout learning activities and encourage active participation. Excitement and enjoyment emerged when students interacted with the digital platforms and actively participated in learning activities, along with confusion and anxiety appearing during challenging tasks. Cognitive engagement emerged through students’ responses and reviewing feedback from the platforms, which showed understanding and meaning-making of learning materials, along with effort and strategies students employed to overcome difficulties and perform well in digital tasks. The study suggested that using a variety of digital platforms in English language learning can positively foster student engagement when thoughtfully implemented.
