Abstract

ABSTRACT Psychological well-being is an important aspect for both students living in intact families and those living in orphanages. This study aims to explore the psychological well-being of junior high school students living in orphanages. This study used a qualitative approach with a phenomenological design to describe psychological well-being based on sources. The participants of this study consisted of three junior high school students living in an orphanage from classes VII, VIII, and IX aged 14 and 15 years old. The results showed that the sources of psychological well-being come from both internal and external sources. The internal sources are social comparison, self-acceptance, and life purpose, while the external sources are social support and caregiving. Both of these sources were based on religious-based spiritual values. The values of spirituality expressed by participants through religious attitudes such as prayer, gratitude, and surrender to God are aspects that underlie participants in developing positive attitudes towards themselves and their lives. The values of spirituality are a unique finding of the study where the dimension of spirituality is not included in the dimensions that build psychological well-being formulated by Ryff, even though these spirituality values are an important aspect in developing participants' psychological well-being. The values of spirituality manifested by participants in the form of prayer, gratitude, and surrender to God become the foundation of other dimensions of psychological well-being. Keywords: junior high school students, orphanage, psychological well-being
