Linguistics description: This research was aimed at investigating the use of pictures in teaching reading descriptive text to junior high school students. A quasi experimental design was employed in the study. Two classes of the seventh graders at a junior high school in Bandung were selected purposively as the sample. The data were obtained through a pre-test, a post-test, and a questionnaire. The findings were analyzed statistically using independent t-test procedure and close ended questionnaire procedure. The statistical computation showed that the use of pictures was likely to be effective in improving the students’ reading ability in descriptive text (tobt 4.573 > tcrit 2.000, r = 0.506). Furthermore, the factors influenced the effectiveness of using pictures were also supported by students’ responses in the questionnaire. Most of students gave positive responses to the use of pictures technique in teaching reading descriptive text. The use of pictures gave some benefits such as; increasing students’ motivation, improving students’ understanding in reading, assisting students to develop creativity, helping student to translate the text from English to Bahasa, and increasing students’ thinking ability. In addition, the use of pictures was effective because it help students in giving clues in reading descriptive text. The research recommended for future research to investigate the effectiveness of using pictures technique in improving the other skills such as writing, listening, or speaking. Besides, the researcher may occupy true experimental design, thus the result of the research can be generalized and implemented widely.
