It aims to identify the ideology of state apparatus and the way ideology operates in the novel entitled Uglies by Scott Westerfeld (2005). The data are collected from the novel in a form of words, phrases and sentences. The study uses qualitative approach and textual analysis method to make a systematic description of the collected data. To analyze the data, various theories related to Ideology (Marx, 1845; Stephens, 1992; Lyle, 1997; Mason, 1995; Althusser, 1971) and power (French, 1985) are employed. A discussion on young adult literature is highlighted as it is useful to support a deeper analysis of the novel. The findings show that according to Marx’s (1845) ideology theory, the pretties and the uglies are portrayed as a class division. Four aspects of Marx’s (1845) theory of ideology, i.e., ideas production (forces of ideas production), conception (the state of society), and consciousness which lead to contradiction are found in Uglies. In relation with the way ideology operated in Uglies, both “ideological state apparatus” and “repressive state apparatus” use their power to control society with the idea that everybody needs to get operation to become pretty. Moreover, with regards to contradiction that leads to self-consciousness, Tally’s (the main female character) self-consciousness, in which she finally sees that ideology is used by state apparatus to control society achieved by her self-agency. Therefore, it is concluded that without any control from state apparatus, self-agency arises and leads to a self-consciousness. date: 2012-04-27 date_type: published institution: Universitas Pendidikan Indonesia department: KODEPRODI79202#Bahasa_dan_Sastra_Inggris_S1 thesis_type: other thesis_name: other official_url: http://repository.upi.edu/ related_url_url: http://perpustakaan.upi.edu/ related_url_type: org citation: Asep Saepudin, - (2012) QUESTIONING PRETTINESS: SELF-AGENCY IN SCOTT WESTERFELD’S UGLIES.
