The research is a qualitative research with textual analysis approach. It employs Foucault’s concept of power (1982) to analyze the data in form of words, phrases, and sentences taken as textual evidence from The Help. The analysis shows that racism is expressed through prejudice and discrimination. The white characters use their prejudices such as the skin color issue to justify discrimination towards the blacks. Besides, the whites also tend to exercise their power to impose and maintain racism. They restrict the blacks to have better jobs, even humiliate the black maids by building separated bathrooms for them. On the other hand, resistance and negotiation emerge as the reaction towards power. When the blacks resist the power, the whites negotiate it by expressing care and love to the blacks which is called anti racism. This study also confirms Gordon’s idea which states that racism comes from a deceive choice (Gordon, 1989 as cited in Garcia, 1999). Within power in their hands, the whites have choice to be racist or not. date: 2012-08-22 date_type: published institution: Universitas Pendidikan Indonesia department: KODEPRODI79202#Bahasa_dan_Sastra_Inggris_S1 thesis_type: other thesis_name: other official_url: http://repository.upi.edu/ related_url_url: http://perpustakaan.upi.edu/ related_url_type: org citation: Lely Sagita Muchtar, - (2012) RACISM AS A CHOICE: The Representation Of Racism and Anti Racism Toward The Blacks In The Help.
