"This study investigates the use and the function of\r\ncode switching performed by the characters in the novel\r\nentitled Jendela-Jendela written by Fira Basuki, To\r\ninvestigate the phenomenon, the descriptive method is used.\r\nThe data were collected from novel which associated\r\nwith code switching performed by the characters. The data\r\nwere classified based on its syntactic categories, type, and\r\nfunction of code switching. Furthermore, occurrences of code\r\nswitching in each category were identified, and their\r\npercentages were calculated for further accounts of the\r\ndata. Interpretations were made on tendencies that appeared\r\nfrom the quantification.\r\nThere were several findings found in this study.\r\nFirst, based on its syntactic categories, the code switching\r\nperformed by the characters in the novel is found in the\r\nlevel of word, phrase, and clause. Second, code switching\r\nwhich is transformed into the syntax of the main language\r\nmostly occurred at the phrase level. All of the phrases\r\nstick to Indonesian syntactic categories. Third, there were\r\ntwo types of code switching found in the novel; those are\r\nintra sentential and inter sentential. Fourth, the function\r\nof code switching performed by the characters in the novel\r\nare giving emphasis, untranslatability, personalization,\r\ndesignation, clarification, quotation, interjection, and\r\nreiteration.\r\nIn the end, it can be concluded that the phenomenon of\r\nthe use of code switching performed by the characters in\r\nthis novel is influenced by the author's background who is\r\nbilingual and the setting of the story itself which involves\r\ndifferent places, namely Indonesia, Singapore, and United\r\nStates."^^ .
