N2  - Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk menganalisis struktur dan makna dari modalitas darou dalam novel Ensemble Stars. Modalitas darou yang memiliki beberapa fungsi seringkali membuat pembelajar asing kesulitan dalam memahami penggunaannya. Hal tersebut membuat penulis tertarik untuk menggali lebih dalam tentang penggunaan darou, terutama dalam karya novel Ensemble Stars yang banyak dikonsumsi oleh pembelajar di Indonesia. Untuk mengetahui struktur dan makna modalitas darou peneliti menggunakan metode deskriptif. Kalimat yang mengandung modalitas darou dalam novel ini ada 183 kalimat yang kemudian diambil sampel 21 kalimat. Berdasarkan hasil diketahui bahwa modalitas darou dapat melekat pada nomina, adjektiva, dan verba. Dari hasil juga dapat ditarik bahwa modalitas darou memiliki makna dugaan yang berupa kesimpulan pembicara atau  bertanya pada diri sendiri. Makna lainnya adalah makna konfirmasi untuk mengkonfirmasi dugaan pada lawan bicara atau memancing lawan bicara agar setuju dengan pembicara.

This study aims to analyze the structure and meaning of the darou modality in the novel Ensemble Stars. Darou modality which has several functions often makes it difficult for Japanese learner to understand its use. This makes writer interested in digging deeper into the use of darou, especially in the novel Ensemble Stars which is widely consumed by students in Indonesia. To find out the structure and meaning of the modalities, the researcher used a descriptive method. There are 183 sentences containing the modality of darou in this novel, which are then taken as a sample of 21 sentences. Based on the results, it is known that the modality of darou can be attached to nouns, adjectives, and verbs. From the results, it can also be concluded that the modality of darou has a conjectural meaning in the form of a speaker's conclusion or asking oneself. Another meaning is the meaning of confirmation to confirm an assumption or to provoke the interlocutor to agree with the speaker.
