The Kayu Merah–Kalumata area in Ternate City holds a strategic position as a new urban node, yet it has long lacked historical significance. This research aims to propose a design concept that not only addresses spatial needs and sustainability principles but also places local cultural identity as its primary foundation through a spatial–narrative approach. The research questions focus on how the symbolism of history and the Tara No Ate imaginary axis can be reinterpreted contextually, how present urban needs can be accommodated, and how sustainability principles can be implemented adaptively. The study employs a Research by Design methodology with qualitative–descriptive–explorative approaches. Data collection involved literature review, field observation, interviews with customary leaders and local communities, spatial mapping using satellite imagery, regulatory analysis, and expert validation. Findings reveal that (1) the past dimension highlights Kayu Merah–Kalumata as a reflective node completing the Tara No Ate imaginary axis; (2) the present dimension demonstrates the demand for public spaces, healthcare facilities, economic hubs, and cultural venues to support social interaction; (3) the future dimension emphasizes sustainability through architectural design that is adaptive to tropical climate conditions. The synthesis of these dimensions results in a master plan that not only fulfills functional requirements but also embodies local identity through architectural elements such as the Momole Monument, Cultural Plaza, Regional Hospital, UMKM center, and green public spaces. This study concludes that spatial–narrative design enables Kayu Merah–Kalumata to emerge as a reflective and contextual urban space that bridges historical memory with the modern dynamics of Ternate City. date: 2025-08-29 type: Thesis type: NonPeerReviewed format: text language: id identifier: http://repository.upi.edu/144783/7/T_TA_2317382_Title.pdf format: text language: id identifier: http://repository.upi.edu/144783/8/T_TA_2317382_%20Appendix.pdf format: text language: id identifier: http://repository.upi.edu/144783/9/T_TA_2317382_Chapter1.pdf format: text language: id identifier: http://repository.upi.edu/144783/10/T_TA_2317382_Chapter2.pdf format: text language: id identifier: http://repository.upi.edu/144783/11/T_TA_2317382_Chapter4.pdf format: text language: id identifier: http://repository.upi.edu/144783/12/T_TA_2317382_Chapter3.pdf format: text language: id identifier: http://repository.upi.edu/144783/13/T_TA_2317382_Chapter6.pdf format: text language: id identifier: http://repository.upi.edu/144783/14/T_TA_2317382_Chapter5.pdf identifier: Iksan M S, - and Asep Yudi Permana, - and Sri Handayani, - (2025) DESAIN KAWASAN KAYU MERAH – KALUMATA SEBAGAI RUANG MASA LALU, MASA KINI DAN MASA DEPAN: Studi Kontekstual Identitas Kota Ternate.
