Seni tarling sebagai salah satu bentuk kesenian tradisional khas wilayah Pantai Utara (Pantura) Jawa Barat memiliki kekhasan musikal dan sosial budaya yang terus mengalami perubahan seiring perkembangan zaman. Fokus utama penelitian ini adalah aspek perkembangan unsur musikal, mencangkup perubahan dalam penggunaan instrumen, komsep garap atau aransemen, serta tantangan yang dihadapi pelaku seni tarling di tengah arus modernisasi dan pergeseran selera masyarakat. Penelitian ini menggunakan pendekatan kualitatif deskriptif dengan teknik pengumpulam data melalui triangulasi, yaitu observasi, wawancara, dan dokumentasi. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan adanya perbedaan signifikan antara era tarling dulu yang mengandalkan laras tradisional seperti pelog, salendro, dan prawa, suling, dibandingkan dengan era tarling sekarang yang lebih dinamis dan mengadopsi tangga nada diatonis (mayor dan minor), serta penggunaan instrumen pergereseran fungsi seni tarling dari media ekspresi budaya menjadi hiburan komersial. Meskipun demikian, beberapa pelaku seni tetap berupaya mempertahanan esensi nilai-nilai tradisional dalam seni tarling sebagai bagian dari identitas budaya lokal. Penelitian ini diharapkan dapat memperkaya kajian musik tradisional dan menjadi referensi dalam upaya pelestarian seni lokal. This study aims to analyze and describe the musical development in tarling art of Indramayu from the earlier era of tarling to the present. Tarling, as a traditional art form native to the northern coastal region (Pantura) of West Java, is characterized by its unique musical and socio-cultural traits, which continue to evolve over time. The main focus of this research lies in the development of musical elements, including changes in the use of instruments, arrangement concepts, and the challenges faced by tarling artists amidst modernization and shifting public tastes. This study employs a qualitative descriptive approach, with data collection techniques using triangulation, namely observation, interviews, and documentation. The findings reveal significant differences between the earlier era of tarling, which relied on traditional tuning systems such as pelog, salendro, and prawa, with soft melodic structures and primary instruments such as acoustic guitar and bamboo flute, and the current era of tarling, which adopts a more dynamic musical approach with diatonic scales (major and minor), and the use of electronic instruments such as keyboards and electric guitars. This development reflects a shift in the function of tarling from a medium of cultural expression to commercial entertainment. Nevertheless, several artists strive to preserve the traditional values embedded in tarling as part of local cultural identity.
