Penelitian ini mengkaji pemilihan tempat magang, realitas pekerjaan selama magang, serta dampaknya terhadap mobilitas karier mahasiswa. Dengan pendekatan kualitatif dan desain studi kasus multikasus, data dikumpulkan melalui wawancara, observasi dan studi dokumentasi konten X/Twitter. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa keputusan mahasiswa mengikuti unpaid internship dipengaruhi oleh kewajiban akademik, motivasi intrinsik, dukungan keluarga, keterbatasan lowongan berbayar, reputasi perusahaan, dan fleksibilitas kerja. Terdapat dua persepsi terhadap aktivitas magang: (1) sebagai pengalaman bermakna yang menekankan kompetensi, pembelajaran terstruktur, lingkungan kerja suportif, dan insentif non-finansial; atau (2) sebagai eksploitasi dengan beban kerja tidak proporsional dan minim manfaat. Dampak jangka panjang unpaid internship terlihat pada pengembangan jaringan profesional, peningkatan keterampilan teknis dan non-teknis, kualitas CV, serta penyerapan kerja. Namun, secara struktural, praktik ini berpotensi memperkuat ketidaksetaraan akses dan lock-in effect di sektor upah rendah. Dengan demikian, nilai unpaid internship sebagai investasi karier sangat bergantung pada kualitas dan relevansi pengalaman magang yang diberikan. ABSTRACT The demands of the professional world push students to prepare for their careers as early as possible, one of which is through unpaid internships, positioned both as future career preparation and a means to recruit free labour. This study examines the selection of internship placements, the reality of work during internships, and their impact on students' career mobility. Using a qualitative approach with a multiple-case study design, data was collected through interviews, observations, and social media X/Twitter content documentation. The findings reveal that students' decisions to participate in unpaid internships are influenced by academic requirements, intrinsic motivation, family support, limited paid opportunities, company reputation, and work flexibility. Perceptions of internship experiences diverge into two categories: (1) meaningful experiences emphasizing competency, structured learning, supportive work environments, and non-financial incentives; or (2) exploitative conditions with disproportionate workloads and minimal benefits. Long-term impacts of unpaid internships include professional networking, technical and soft skill development, CV enhancement, and employment absorption. However, structurally, this practice risks reinforcing access inequality and lock-in effects in low-wage sectors.
