Penelitian ini bertujuan menganalisis model mental siswa kelas XII pada topik pemuaian dengan menggunakan instrumen HE-CEDIMM (Heat Expansion Content Explanation Drawing Instrument for Mental Model) dan DBTA (Drawing-Based Thematic Analysis). Metode yang digunakan adalah metode campuran dengan desain triangulasi. Partisipan terdiri atas 60 siswa SMA Negeri di Kota Bandung yang telah mempelajari materi suhu dan kalor, khususnya pemuaian. Data kuantitatif diperoleh dari tes uraian HE-CEDIMM untuk mengkategorikan model mental ke dalam kategori scientific, synthetic, dan initial. Data kualitatif diperoleh melalui DBTA dengan menganalisis gambar siswa. Hasil triangulasi data kuantitatif dan kualitatif pada lima konteks peristiwa pemuaian, yaitu pemuaian balon dengan kategori dominan Synthetic Hybrid Concept Visualization (Syn-HCV), pemuaian tutup toples dengan kategori dominan Synthetic Hybrid Concept Visualization (Syn-HCV), pemuaian air dalam teko dengan kategori dominan Initial Hybrid Concept Visualization (In-HCV), pemuaian bola dan cincin logam dengan kategori dominan Synthetic Hybrid Concept Visualization (Syn-HCV), serta pemuaian batang logam dengan kategori dominan Synthetic Limited Concept Visualization (Syn-LCV).Temuan ini mengindikasikan bahwa model mental ilmiah siswa tentang pemuaian zat belum utuh bahkan masih bercampur dengan miskonsepsi, sehingga diperlukan strategi pembelajaran yang mengintegrasikan representasi visual dan konseptual untuk membentuk model mental yang ilmiah. Mental models play an important role in helping students understand physical phenomena, including at the microscopic scale; however, studies on heat expansion remain limited. This study aims to analyze the mental models of 12th-grade students on the topic of heat expansion using HE-CEDIMM (Heat Expansion Content Explanation Drawing Instrument for Mental Model) and DBTA (Drawing-Based Thematic Analysis). The research employed a mixed-method approach with a triangulation design. Participants consisted of 60 students from a public senior high school in Bandung who had studied the concepts of temperature and heat, particularly heat expansion. Quantitative data were obtained from HE-CEDIMM essay tests to categorize students’ mental models into scientific, synthetic, and initial categories. Qualitative data were obtained through DBTA by analyzing students’ drawings. The triangulation of quantitative and qualitative data across five heat expansion contexts revealed the following: balloon expansion with the dominant category Synthetic Hybrid Concept Visualization (Syn-HCV), jar lid expansion with the dominant category Synthetic Hybrid Concept Visualization (Syn-HCV), water in kettle expansion with the dominant category Initial Hybrid Concept Visualization (In-HCV), metal ball and ring expansion with the dominant category Synthetic Hybrid Concept Visualization (Syn-HCV), and metal rod expansion with the dominant category Synthetic Limited Concept Visualization (Syn-LCV). These findings indicate that students’ scientific understanding of heat expansion is incomplete and still mixed with misconceptions.
