Background: HIV/AIDS is a global health challenge that has an impact on reducing immune function and increasing the risk of opportunistic infections. Antiretroviral therapy (ARV) is the main intervention in suppressing viral replication, although side effects such as nausea, dizziness and fatigue can affect treatment compliance and quality of life. The patient's self-management ability to manage self-care is the key to successful ARV therapy, including maintaining adherence, dealing with side effects, and utilizing social support. Objective: This study aims to analyze the relationship between side effects of ARV treatment and self-management abilities in HIV/AIDS patients at Teratai Polyclinic, Umar Wirahadikusumah Hospital. Method: This quantitative descriptive study with a cross-sectional approach involved 56 patients using a total sampling technique. Univariate statistical analysis describes the data, and the Pearson product moment correlation test analyzes the relationship between ARV side effects and self-management abilities. Results: Side effects of ARVs include changes in hair, weight, body shape, digestive disorders and sexual problems, which affect self-confidence and quality of life. Mental problems such as anxiety and chronic fatigue are also a concern. Good self-management is influenced by positive relationships with health workers, social support, and the ability to accept HIV as a chronic condition. Conclusion: Although no significant relationship was found between ARV side effects and self-management skills, a holistic approach, multidimensional support, continuing education, and innovative technology play an important role in the success of ARV therapy. Keywords: antiretroviral therapy (ARV), HIV/AIDS, self-management, side effects.
