Pendekatan penelitian yang digunakan adalah deskriptif kualitatif dengan metode studi kasus. Subjek penelitian terdiri dari 16 siswa kelas V di salah satu SD Negeri di Kecamatan Lembang, Kabupaten Bandung Barat. Data diperoleh melalui tes pemecahan masalah berbasis Asesmen Kompetensi Minimum (AKM) dan wawancara mendalam. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa 75% siswa berada pada kategori kesulitan tinggi, dengan kesulitan dominan pada tahap memahami masalah, transformasi, dan keterampilan proses. Siswa kategori tinggi mengalami kesulitan minor, siswa kategori sedang menunjukkan kesulitan bervariasi, sedangkan siswa kategori rendah mengalami kesulitan di hampir semua tahapan Newman. Faktor penyebab kesulitan meliputi lemahnya pemahaman konsep, miskonsepsi, rendahnya keterampilan berpikir kritis, dan kurangnya pengalaman dalam mengaitkan konsep pecahan dengan konteks nyata. Rekomendasi yang diberikan mencakup penggunaan media konkret, latihan soal berjenjang, serta pembelajaran berbasis masalah untuk meningkatkan kemampuan pemecahan masalah siswa. This study aims to analyze the difficulties of fifth-grade elementary school students in solving fraction problems based on Newman's stages, which include Reading, Comprehension, Transformation, Process Skills, and Encoding. This research employed a qualitative descriptive approach using a case study method. The subjects consisted of 16 fifth-grade students from a public elementary school in Lembang District, West Bandung Regency. Data were collected through a problem-solving test based on the Minimum Competency Assessment (AKM) and in-depth interviews. The results revealed that 75% of students were in the high-difficulty category, with the most dominant challenges occurring in Comprehension, Transformation, and Process Skills stages. High-category students experienced only minor difficulties, medium-category students showed varied difficulties, while low-category students struggled in almost all Newman’s stages. The main factors causing these difficulties included weak conceptual understanding, misconceptions, low critical thinking skills, and limited experience in applying fractions to real-life contexts.
