Dengan menggunakan pendekatan kualitatif dan desain fenomenologi-hermeneutis, penelitian ini melibatkan delapan siswa kelas X di salah satu SMA Negeri di Kota Bandung. Data dikumpulkan melalui tes tulis yang telah divalidasi, wawancara semi-struktur, dan studi dokumentasi. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa concept image siswa pada materi eksponen dan sifat-sifatnya belum sepenuhnya sesuai dengan concept definition formal. Meskipun beberapa siswa sudah memiliki pemahaman prosedural baik, pemahaman konseptual juga diperlukan agar dikatakan sesuai dengan concept defintion formal. Terdapat tiga faktor dominan yang menyebabkan perbedaan concept image siswa dengan concept definition formal, diantaranya pengajaran guru yang berfokus pada aspek prosedural, pemahaman konsep prasyarat yang rendah, dan kurangnya keterlibatan konsep eksponen dan sifat-sifatnya secara berkelanjutan. Akibatnya, sebagian besar siswa mengalami didactical obstacle dan epistemological obstacle. Penelitian ini dapat memberikan wawasan tentang bagaimana concept image siswa terbentuk dan implikasinya bagi pembelajaran yang mendukung pemahaman sesuai dengan concept definition formal. This research aims to examine students' concept image of exponents and their properties, as well as to identify the types of learning obstacles experienced by students. Using a qualitative approach and a phenomenological-hermeneutical design, this study involved eight 10th-grade students from a public high school in Bandung City. Data were collected through a validated written test, semi-structured interviews, and document analysis. The results show that students' concept image of exponents and their properties is not yet fully aligned with the formal concept definition. Although some students have good procedural understanding, conceptual understanding is also necessary to be considered in line with the formal concept definition. There are three dominant factors causing the difference between students' concept image and the formal concept definition, including teacher instruction focusing on procedural aspects, low understanding of prerequisite concepts, and lack of continuous engagement with the concept of exponents and their properties. As a result, most students experience didactical obstacles and epistemological obstacles. This research can provide insights into how students' concept images are formed and its implications for learning that supports understanding in accordance with the formal concept definition.
