Abstract
This research paper is entitled “The Subtitling Strategies Used in Fiction Film (An Analysis of Translation Errors in Translating Subtitles of Evan Almighty Film).” It is aimed to observe the subtitling strategies used in translating the subtitles of Evan Almighty film and the translation errors occurred in the film subtitles of Evan Almighty. The research is based on Newmark’s theory on translation methods and Gottlieb’s subtitling strategies. The main data of the research were taken from the film script and film subtitle. Descriptive-qualitative method is used to analyze the main data. The findings reveal that the most frequent subtitling strategy used in translating the film subtitles is transfer (34%) and the least frequent subtitling strategy used is transcription (1%). The findings also reveal that several translation errors occurred in applying the subtitling strategies. Apparently, the possible causes of the translation errors are the translator’s awareness in translation process, inappropriateness of the strategy used and the lack of translator's personal skill, such as vocabulary mastery, the grammar mastery and the skill of comprehending the SL and interpreting in TL. As a recommendation, this kind of research is suitable for the English students because it can gain their ability in analyzing translation product as practices; for the next researcher, it is important to solve the problems about subtitling strategies used by applying other methods of research.
