Abstract
This study entitled “Living in-between: Reading Hybridity in Jean Kwok’s Girl in Translation” examined the novel Girl in Translation (2010) by the Chinese American author Jean Kwok. This study was conducted in the context of postcolonial theory by addressing Bhabha’s concept of hybridity to analyze the construction of hybridity in the novel and to identify the factors affecting the construction. The writer then found out that the novel’s representation of hybridity is constructed through the main character’s in-between positions that are represented in three different contact zones: in-between past and present, in-between private and public, and in-between Chinese and American. However, the writer determined that its representation is both one of trauma and one of becoming. Furthermore, the writer identified that the construction of hybridity occupied by the main character is significantly influenced by the main character’s family (mother), friends, and class difference (poverty).
