Abstract

The paper entitled A Study on a Child’s Understanding on Interrogative Constructions (A case study on a thirty two-month child) focuses on interrogative constructions that a child can understand and the child’s responses in coping with those interrogatives. It is a case study of a thirty two-month child named Gallista. The descriptive qualitative is used in this research in order to investigate child’s understandings on interrogatives since according to Remick (1976 in Reich 1986:115) a child begins to be asked in the early age. There are four settings in this research. Those settings are the child-the mother, the child-the researcher, the child-an older child and the child-an equal child setting. The data analysis shows that child can understand the real questions better than rhetorical questions. The responses are contingent response, imitative response, noncontingent response, specific request for repetition, and specific request for confirmation. The child responds to the conversation also by using gestures. There are some factors influencing Gallista’s responses in each setting, i.e. cognitive maturation, emotional relationship, social interaction between the speakers, and self-concept of the child
